Stine’s Story.

On 15th of December 2006, my life took an unexpected turn when I received a diagnosis that would change everything: a Brain tumour. At 37 , I was a mother and a wife, full of dreams and plans for the future. Ashley my husband was miles away in Australia, playing in the Ashes. The news was devastating but at the same time, I was relieved that I had an answer to why I have been feeling so unwell for a long time. I was in surgery with in 5 days and the operation was a success. However it marked the beginning of a long journey.

Five years later, I faced another diagnosis: Two new Brain Tumours.

The uncertainty and the fear returned, and it took months to find a treatment path. Luckily for Me, the Birmingham hospital charity, had been fundraising for years to purchase a radio therapy machine called TomoTherapy, I was one of the first patients to be treated on this new machine . Thanks to the fundraising from the Hospital Charity in Birmingham and it was a life changing moment.

Surviving this ordeal ignited a passion in both My husband and I.

We promised ourselves to give back to the community that supported us.

Born out of
determination.

In 2015, we founded The Giles Trust , under the umbrella of the Hospital Charity in Birmingham. We were determined to raising much needed funds into research. We were the first to invest in a research nurse in Birmingham, but since then we have also invested in Stine’s Home from Home, invested in AI and most needed Equipment to support the clinical team , but equally important is also to support our Patients and the family with special treats.

This experience not only changed my life but also impacted my family deeply.

Our children were very young. How do explain such a serious matter to a 4 and a 6 year old? Ashley had to rush back to England to be by my side, a moment that brought home the seriousness of our situation.

Now as we embark on the New Chapter, we are filled with hope and determination. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Brain tumours.

Artificial Intelligence

AI Research

Thanks to the support of the Giles Trust Brain Tumour Foundation, researchers are developing pioneering AI technologies to improve the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of brain tumours. By analysing advanced MRI scans and predicting tumour behaviour, AI is helping clinicians make faster, more accurate decisions and paving the way for more personalised care for patients.

Vital Equipment

Nexstim Brain Scanner

The NextstimBrain scanner is an advanced imaging platform designed to work hand‑in‑hand with AI to better understand each patient’s tumour and guide personalised treatment decisions.

Surgical Navigational System

Giles Trust funding is helping to advance surgical navigation systems that support neurosurgeons during complex brain operations. By combining augmented reality with real-time imaging, these technologies improve precision, enhance patient safety and help surgeons distinguish tumour tissue from healthy brain tissue more accurately.

Pioneering Technology

VR Goggles

VR goggles are mainly used before brain surgery to help neurosurgeons view MRI or CT scans in 3D. This helps them locate abnormalities, plan the safest surgical approach, improve precision, and reduce the risk of complications.

15,000

People a year are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour. That’s 35 a day!

12/100

12 of every 100 patients diagnosed with a primary brain tumour survive 10 years or more.

2%

£500 million goes towards Cancer research, but under 2% goes towards Brain Tumour research.

5,400

More than 5,400 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year.

Brain tumour research is significantly underfunded.

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 in the UK, but the impact extends far beyond the diagnosis itself. Every brain tumour affects families, friends, carers, and entire communities, changing lives in ways that are often unseen. Despite this devastating impact, brain tumour research remains significantly underfunded, limiting progress towards earlier diagnosis, more effective treatments, and ultimately better outcomes for everyone affected. At The Giles Trust, we’re committed to raising awareness of this funding gap, supporting efforts that help drive meaningful research and bring hope for the future. Alongside Brain Tumour Research, one of our aims is to increase the amount of funding allocated to Brain cancer research to 10%
